Enough water was coming down to create a dreary and annoying drizzle. There was enough water on the roads to slosh inside my shoes. The temperature was low enough to send shivers and to create red noses and numb fingers.

Normally, my first reaction to such circumstances, especially on Christmas afternoon, is to groan and wish I was snug at home or at least in the car. But then I thought about the person sitting in front of me.

James had no home. no family to spend the holidays with. Instead, he got spend Christmas in his old raddy sleeping bag, with a mud smeared garbage bag beside him, and random junk strewn around his living room under the bridge. He got to spend it with these giant gray clouds and this monotonous rain.

On Christmas afternoon Leslie and I trudged under bridges and across streets with my Aunt, Uncle, brother, and cousins in downtown Eugene, Oregon. With hot chocolate and Christmas cookies in arm, we spent two hours with eyes out for panhandlers and homeless people. We also got to give away a few H2O bags as presents for their Christmas.

moral of the story...what in this life is so precious that it's too valuable to give away. Would you give James your family while you took his place under the bridge? Would you give James you whole turkey dinner while taking his granola bar instead? How about your job? your home? your very life?

Jesus told one rich man to sell everything he had and to give it to the poor (Mark 10:21). According to statistics, if you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the people in the world, and if you have money in the bank, in your wallet and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. I don't believe Jesus was just speaking to that one rich man in the Bible.
He says that those who lose so great a thing as their life have actually found it (Matthew 10:49). He says that any of us who does not give up everything we have cannot be His disciple (Luke 14:33).

James had so little...nothing of value. We have so much. Can we not even spare a couple hours to sing Christmas carols for him or give him our grandma's specially home-baked Christmas cookies?

Give a cup of hot chocolate.
Give a smile.
Give hope. just give.

It always encourages us to hear of H2O bags reaching panhandlers through people like you. Hearing stories of how God has used you to bless someone in need makes us so excited! Here is a story from a lady in Portland, who regularly gives out bags, but enjoys a different experience each time.

"I just wanted to share what happened this morning!

On my way to work I found a lady along side the off ramp near Mall 205. She was holding a sign asking for donations. I held out the H2O bag and a hand made stocking cap. Because I was the 2nd car in line, she had to walk a bit to get to me. It was a struggle for her but she made it and smiled a big smile when she saw the bag & cap. She thanked me over and over saying how sweet and thoughtful it was. We exchanged ‘Merry Christmas’ & God bless you’s’. When she got back to her spot she started opening the bag but I had to move before she got into the contents. Again, I prayed for her as I drove away. Oh, and she was wearing a red felt hat with reindeer antlers on it!!!

I look forward to the chances to hand out the H2O bags because I love the responses and the looks in the eyes of the receivers. Thank you for preparing the way to bless others with God’s love."

JustforHim Design has been creating a new website for H2O, which is being launched January 1st of the new year.

The site will still have a blog feature to enable us to keep you updated, but will expand our capabilities with a better system of distributing starter kits and bracelets and other functions that will improve our ability to communicate clearly what H2O is and what people can do to be involved.

Hidden Beauty

I couldn't help but take it in...a baby sat in her stroller wailing while her mom dug through a pile of blankets and clothes. Barbecue smoke billowed from behind several rows of hanging jackets. Hundreds of people pushed and shoved to get first pick at the hats and scarves. As they swarmed past and bumped into me, my nose resisted to wrinkle under the odor that emanated from their stained tattered coats.

Although my surroundings appeared gray and dirty, hidden beauty somehow attracted me to it.

Earlier that morning my sister and I joined a small group of teenagers in leading games for Portland's homeless. Our assigned games consisted of a peculiar ring toss and dart throw at balloons. We received no directions but were told, "Just make it fun." Clueless in where to start making rules and organizing prizes, we feared that no one would care for the "homemade" games.

As the first players trickled in, we were surprised with how they responded. Their pleasure wasn't in the game itself but in the simple competition with each other. One short young man dressed in slacks and a tie stepped forward with a giant grin on his face. Leaning over to his friend, he jokingly boasted, "How much do you want to bet that I can pop a balloon on the first try?" He closed one eye and carefully aimed the dart. Then with a step and a windup he sent the dart whizzing toward the pink targets. With a thud, the dart missed and fell.

At the failed attempt, he and his friend erupted into laughter. "I bet I could do better," the latter challenged. The two of them took several turns challenging each other back and forth. Their joy in competing and winning reminded me of how real these people are. Unfortunately, I often fail to see the men and women on the street corners as individuals with friends and feelings, desires and dreams. But watching these men smile and laugh as if they were kings encouraged me to treat them like they really were the richest men on earth.

Meanwhile, a married couple was trying on different hats, debating over the best ones to choose. The wife pulled out a rainbow beanie and slid it over her blond hair. She then walked up to the widows of the building to see her reflection. She turned as if she was a model in front of a crowd. After observing herself, she then returned to her husband saying she'd keep it.

To prepare for the cold weather, every homeless person made a stop by the table of blankets. Each of them spent considerable time choosing their favorite print. Most of them were outdated, ones we'd get rid of right away. Others were faded. I overheard a lady telling her friend, "Look at this blanket I got! Don't you like the pattern?" She lifted up a faded blue comforter with a flowered print covering it.

A rainbow beanie and outdated quilt are two things I probably would never buy. But even the used, unpopular items of our culture were valuable to them.

Spending a morning with the poor is more eyeopening then I ever imagined. I got a taste for their life but also a new perspective of my own.

C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity (part 2)

"Some people nowadays say that charity ought to be unnecessary and that instead of giving to the poor we ought to be producing a society in which there were no poor to give to. They may be quite right in saying that we ought to produce this kind of society. But if anyone thinks that, as a consequence, you can stop giving in the meantime, then he has parted company with all Christian morality.

I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words,' if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small.

For many of us the great obstacle to charity lies not in our luxurious living or desire for more money, but in our fear--fear of insecurity. This must often be recognized as a temptation.

Sometimes our pride also hinders our charity; we are tempted to spend more than we ought on the showy forms of generosity (tipping, hospitality) and less than we ought on those who really need our help."

C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity (part 1)

I've been reading through C.S. Lewis' book "Mere Christianity", and have been struck by several points he makes on how we, as Christians, look on others.

"That is why Christians are told not to judge. We see only the results which a
man's choices make out of his raw material. But God does not judge him on the
raw material at all, but on what he has done with it. Most of the man's
psychological make-up is probably due to his body: when his body dies all that
will fall off him, and the real central man, the thing that chose, that made the
best or the worst out of this material, will stand naked. All sorts of nice
things which we thought our own, but which were really due to a good digestion,
will fall off some of us: all sorts of nasty things which were due to complexes
or bad health will fall off others. We shall then, for the first time, see every
one as he really was. There will be surprises."

If you didn't read it slowly...I encourage you, go back and read it again. Lewis makes such a crucial point in this paragraph, one that is a valuable lesson for all of us.

Often times, we look at the outer appearance of someone like a panhandler or homeless man and shun because of his poor health habits or his apparent laziness. One day, all that will be stripped away and we will see that man on the curb for who he really was. Who knows? Maybe he has a heart of joy and love for the Lord disguised under the scrawny appearance. What C.S. Lewis points out is that the ones driving the cars wear disguises too. One day, all that will be stripped away and we will see you for who you really are.

In other words, we don't have reason to judge others because we can't see their heart.

This past summer I got to watch a homeless man sit down with one of my friends and tell her all the things he's learning in scripture...the prophesies of Jesus and how each was fulfilled, etc. Yet I know church-goers who haven't cared any more about the Bible than this homeless man.

Save the judging for the Lord, the One who sees all our hearts plainly and before whom we'll all have to give an account one day.

"This is an awesome ministry. I had one of the bags in my car last summer (late summer) and was stopped at one of those lights that controls traffic flow onto the highway. A guy was there with a sign asking for help so....I rolled down my window, handed him the bag and said, "May God bless you today!" I looked in my rear view mirror as I drove off...he was looking inside...the rest is up to the Lord! I think these are a wonderful idea and a thoughtful way to express love and offer hope!"

Insights in Isaiah

I've been reading through Isaiah lately, and a few days ago I came across Isaiah 58:5-11.

Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am.' If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

It occurred to me that this passage applies to more than just a day of fasting. Think about it. What kind of "religion" is most pleasing to the Lord? People who are pious and reverent or people who "pour themselves out for the hungry" and "take away the pointing of the finger". The Lord calls us to take action, to free the captive, and have compassion on the poor and the hungry.

I love the song by Tim Hughes called "God of Justice". The chorus goes as follows:

We must go, live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken
We must go
Stepping forward, keep us from just singing
Move us into action
We must go

Christianity is more than reverent prayers and angelic singing. In fact in Luke 18:10-13, Jesus shows us what form of "religion" or prayer is appealing in His eyes.

"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men-- robbers, evildoers, adulterers-- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

May we not settle for a laid back version of our faith. May we pour ourselves out for the hungry and remove the yokes from our midst. Lord, move us into action!

What kind of tracts do you use the most? Can we put Bibles in instead?

We prefer to use Max Lucado's tract called "3:16". Lucado gives a very clear, concise, and accurate explanation of the gospel which is very easy to follow and understand. There are many kinds of tracts out there, but this is our favorite so far.
As far as Bibles go, we decided against them for H2O bags, because, for one, they can be slightly overwhelming to someone who hasn't even heard the gospel before. So in that respect, a gospel tract can get the message across more clearly and concisely. Also, they are big, bulky, and heavy, which can make it hard to fit everything into a small bag and would make a bag more of a a pain to drag around.

A concrete "solution" created to give:

Christian groups a witness to their community
Divers a constructive solution to the awkwardness that comes when confronting panhandlers
Panhandlers some physical hope through the food and water and some spiritual hope through the hope of Jesus Christ presented in a gospel tract.

Carrying out, although often the hardest part, is one of the most crucial ones. It's easy to write down some ideas on paper, but to get up off the couch and do them is always easier said then done. So here are a few tips for you:

PRAY! [Jeremiah 42:3 - "Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do." Psalm 5:2 - "Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray."]
Get a team together. [Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 - "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow."]
Do your research. [Other sources often times have fabulous ideas that can give you a boost as you get going. For instance, before we went anywhere with our ideas we called the Portland Rescue Mission, which gave us several great ideas on getting started and encouraged us a lot.]
PRAY! [2 Thessalonians 1:11 - "With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith."] (If you want us to pray for you as you follow the Lord's calling, please don't hesitate to email us at hope2others@gmail.com. 2) CREATE

Brainstorm creative solutions to the problem identified.
Note: You don't have to solve your problem. With H2O, we aren't solving panhandling, but rather impacting panhandlers.

Brainstorm:

Think wild ideas
Brainstorm lots of ideas - the more the merrier
Think outside the box

H2O - brainstorming process:

- 1st idea: Take boxes to refugees around the world.
[we were ages 14 and 11 = not going to happen]

- 2nd idea: Take boxes downtown and hand them out to homeless people.
[we were young and inexperienced and my dad was not going to send us downtown under those conditions.]

- 3rd idea: Give boxes to drivers to hand out their window.
[that's like hauling Christmas presents to all over town...big and inconvenient]

- 4th idea: Put together lunch bags with the some physical and spiritual hope.

Brainstorming doesn't start out pretty...ours didn't, and neither will yours.

3 C's to starting your own ministry...

Leslie and I put together a workshop created to challenge others to creatively solve problems in their communities for the sake of the gospel. Over the next week or so, I'll be posting the 3 steps (or C's) to starting your own ministry...starting with the first 'C': CARE.

1) CARE

...identify a problem in your community (or beyond) that God has laid on your heart.

...find something that you're passionate about.

...recognize what God cares about and prepare to take action on those. (Psalm 82:3; Matt. 25:40)

H2O:

- In summer of 2005, We went to a missions camp which awakened our passion to reach out to refugees/homeless people.

- The problem of panhandlers, God laid on our hearts through a peculiar experience...

We were grocery shopping with our mom. And as we pulled out of the parking lot, we noticed a man on the curb holding a cardboard sign. His hair was grimy...his hands caked with dirt...and his clothes worn and dirty. We wanted so badly to give him something to fill his hungry stomach and brighten his day, but all we had was...a cantaloupe. Nevertheless, that man received a cantaloupe that day. We had no idea how he would even open it, but we knew we had to give him something...so we did.

We were both now wide awake to the problems that God had exposed us too. We now had a passion to reach refugees and panhandlers....but how?

H2O at CBNW women's camp

This weekend (Friday, the 18, - Sunday, the 20th), Leslie and I are heading out to Camp Tadmor to present H2O as a workshop at CBNW women's camp. We're giving a workshop Friday afternoon at 2:00 and then again Saturday morning at 11:00. Saturday afternoon, we are going to be set up at some tables where the ladies can come make their own H2O bag and get more information on our ministry.

We covet your prayers this weekend as we prepare and present.

Pray that Leslie, who is working at camp this summer, would enjoy a weekend break, but would also feel prepared for our talk.
Pray that all the preparations necessary would come together and that the Lord would be speaking through us.
Pray that God would be present and active at this camp.
Pray that we would be honoring to the Lord, that it would not be about us.
Pray for the women that are coming, that they would have soft hearts and would be motivated to take action in ministry.

"Aren't we just enabling these people to continue in their habits?"
"They should be out looking for a real job. Giving them a bag will just help them continue with what they're doing."

First of all, we don't know why these people are out on the roadside begging, and judging them is not going to help them get anywhere. James 2:13 says, "Mercy triumphs over judgment!" We deserved judgment, when the Lord had mercy on us.
Also, this is one reason the H2O bag was created in the first place. The Lord calls us to have compassion, but money truly can enable and support their bad habits. Whatever circumstance they're in, however, whether truly in need or just out for money, everyone needs the hope of Jesus Christ and that, along with food, is what every H2O bag carries.
Warning: It's easy to morph seemingly innocent questions into excuses. Why look for reasons to not show compassion? Wouldn't it be better to look for reasons and ways TO show Christ's love?

I don't see many people asking for handouts along the road. But one in a while there is someone, and it is always a man. Each time I have the opportunity to give out an H2O bag, the recipient seems to be pleasantly surprised. The response is something like: Hey cool! Thanks - or - Wow, a bag of stuff - the last one said "Cool, I just ran out of water! Thanks!" It seems that he had gotten one before.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to reach out and help others.

Are there different opportunities for different people in our church with this ministry?

Definitely yes! H2O wouldn’t be a complete ministry without the involvement of a number of different roles. There’s the producer. This is usually a number of people, working as a team to produce the bags which will then be distributed to drivers. Without the producers, there would be no H2O bags to hand out.

But, what would the producers be without people to get the bags into the hands of the panhandlers? Drivers, the primary form of distribution, play a key role in running any H2O ministry. This can be by giving them out at your church or at a local fair, farmers market, community group, you name it.

However, some people in your church, such as elderly people, may not driver downtown very often and, even if they did, may not feel comfortable handing things out their window. This doesn’t mean that they can’t be active in promoting H2O. What I like to call, Supporters also contribute to the functioning of this ministry. They can fund bags. Basically, they pay for a bag to be distributed by another driver. Also, they can be active in the effectiveness in this ministry simply by praying for the drivers handing them out, the producers supplying them, and the panhandlers receiving them.

So, all in all, the involvement of different roles is crucial to the functioning of H2O.

I was just on my way home from lunch when I gave out one of your bags for the first time. The man came up to the window I handed him the bag and said it was full of snacks. As he walked back to his spot he opened the bag, took out a snack and started munching on it. Then he turned to me and gave me two thumbs up!

We have been excited by the stories that we hear of bags being spread to panhandlers nationwide, and in order to remind ourselves of God's work, we are now starting a weekly post of stories from everyday people who have handed out an H2O bag in their community.

Is H2O limited to large churches or community groups in metro areas?

H2O was primarily designed to target panhandlers standing on exit ramps or curbs, who are usually found in large cities. However, there are many cities nationwide that don't find these people just around the corner. But this doesn't mean that H2O would not be effective in their community. We recently received an email from Katie who lives near Cadiz, Kentucky, where few people can be found with cardboard signs.

"You know, I realized that there are very few homeless people in my area. It's mostly rural. That's not to say we don't have panhandlers. I work in a law office, and often people come in asking for money. Most of them have crazy stories. They just need a few bucks (or so they say). This one guy had a story about needing money because his daughter died in an accident. The next week, he had a story about needing money because his daughter was in the hospital. Giving them money is not the right thing to do."

Katie illustrated a key point as she searched for her target in ministry. Not all panhandlers sit on the curb. You may not drive by them every day... maybe they come to you.

This is all to illustrate that no, H2O is not limited to big churches located in big cities. Panhandlers in the office or at the church need the hope of Christ just as much as those on the exit ramp.

2008 Missions Camp

Leslie and I are very excited about where H2O is going, but we will never forget where it all started. In 2005, Leslie and I had the week of our lives at a summer missions camp in Trout Lake, WA. But that missions camp wasn't just a one time event. This year, WorldVenture is partnering with Camp Jonah to put on another kids missions camp and a highschool missions encounter, with the theme of tribal missions.

Kids Missions Camp (grades 4-8): Come join in the adventure that awaits campers as they are challenged in creative ways to expand their understanding of God's call to missions throughout the world. This year's theme is Tribal Missions. Remember: Kids CAN make a difference. Program by WorldVenture.

Last night, on Thursday the 1st, 23 friends and family gathered to help Leslie and I fill 600 H2O bags for the Rebelution conference this weekend. We started filling bags around 6:30, so I didn't expect to be done until 10:00 or later. But, once again, the Lord worked wonders and we got all the bags filled by nearly 9:00! We had a blast in the midst of our productivity, which is a double bonus.

Thank you SO much to all that took time out of your schedules to come give us a hand!

With the Rebelution conference coming up this Saturday, our goal is to provide H2O bags and starter kits at no cost to the teens there. As a means of covering the cost, we are selling silicone wristbands for $2.00 each.

Obviously you can wear bracelets on your wrist, but here are some unique ways you can use them:

1. Buy extra and give them to people who commit to praying for you as you start an H2O ministry.

2. Hang one in your car to remind you to pray for the homeless and H2O, as well as to remind you to give out bags.

3. Cut one in half and make a book mark for your Bible as a prayer reminder.

4. Use it as a "business card" and give it to someone else who is interested in finding out more about H2O -- the blog site is on the inside of the bracelet.

"Blessings will come down as the prayers go up..."

As a reminder of our reliability on God and dependence upon His provision, Leslie and I are going to try to keep you updated on the many blessings that God provides along this journey with H2O.

As many of you know, Leslie and I were asked to make a number of bags to have available at the Rebelution. For all we knew this could have meant 500-1000 bags, which is more than 5-10x more than we had ever done before. Concerned about the cost and availability of 500-1000 waterbottles or tuna packs, we prayed that God would provide in a way that only God can.

And He did just that.

This afternoon at 3:00 p.m., Leslie and I are going over to our church to unload a delivery of 1500 free waterbottles!
After talking with Alex and Brett Harris, we decided on making 600 H2O bags, leaving us with 900 free waterbottles left over!

Once again, God has shown himself sufficient where we were lacking. May He be praised for His grace!

Rebelution Tour in Portland

God definitely works in multiple wonderful ways. These past few months, Leslie and I have had the privilege of talking to more and more people about this H2O ministry, and God has been faithful to keep opening doors.

One of those opportunities came when Alex and Brett Harris interviewed Leslie and I, as one of the stories to add to their book "Do Hard Things". Well, that was months ago, but their book is now done, and a couple weeks ago, Leslie and I received our own autographed copy. (If anyone wants to know, our story starts on page 199)

They did a fabulous job telling our story and I have really enjoyed the challenge and message that their book sends to teenagers. I give it a five-star rating and highly recommend it to all.

Alex and Brett's conference, The Rebelution, is coming to Portland on May 3, and Leslie and I have the privilege of presenting H2O there as a tool to applying the theme of "Do Hard Things".

We would really appreciate all you prayers now as we prepare for this unique opportunity.
1. Pray that we would be prepared for the conference when the time comes.
2. Pray that God would work through the people that come and that, if it be His will, that H2O would spread to the surrounding churches.
3. Pray that through the Rebelution conference, God would inspire more teenagers to rebel against low expectations and do hard things for His name.

A 10-in-1 way to help a homeless person...

Anticipate the opportunity and be prepared.
Smile and actually say hello. Show respect. It gives dignity.
Engage the person. Don't ignore them. Ask what their greatest need is. If money, what will they do with it? Think creatively about how to help.
Offer an alternative. Carry with you inexpensive healthy food items like granola bars or fruit snacks.
Carry public transportation (www.trimet.org) tickets and encourage them to get to Portland Rescue Mission for food, shelter and other immediate needs.
Keep water bottles in your car and offer a refreshing drink.
Go out of your way to approach them rather than crossing the street to avoid them.
Afterward, be sure to pray for both their physical needs as well as their spiritual hunger.
Be tender, ready to share hope and encouragement. Carry tracts if that's useful.
Print out Rescue Mission coupons and carry them with you. Tape them to a snack bar or water bottle. Tell the person that you support Portland Rescue Mission so that their needs will be met.

When I read this list, I immediately smiled. Why? Because H2O bags take care of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10 on the list. I highly recommend handing out a bag.

Christmas Downtown

In the midst of our holiday celebrations, Leslie and I joined some of our family in a trip to downtown Eugene, where we handed out cups of hot cocoa and a couple Christmas cookies to the local homeless people.
We got to meet some funny people and we had some great and unique experiences...

The Christian radio station, K-love, is hosting a drive to help provide meals for the Rescue Missions and Ministries around the country. This is the article from their website.

866-500-HOPE Hunger to Hope is a cooperative effort between K-LOVE, nationwide Rescue Missions and Ministries to help feed and care for the hungry and hurting. Last year, we were able to provide more than 350,890 meals with the funds raised during this campaign. We hope to exceed that amount for 2007!

Once again we are filling bags! The Lord has been so good to us and this ministry these past few months.

Missions Camp

Next Monday, July 16th, Leslie and I have a unique opportunity up at Camp Jonah in Trout Lake, WA (near Mt. Adams). Camp Jonah is putting on a Missions Camp with the theme: Missions ISpossible. How Kids can make a difference. The Director of the camp asked Leslie and I to come and speak on H2O, how God has used us as kids.

We are very excited for the door that God has opened, but we have some prayer requests.

That the Holy Spirit would give us words to speak and that those words will move in people's hearts.
That through this camp, God would show kids that they can serve Him right from the beginning.
Pray that all the kids (including me ;) would be safe during the week and that we would be able to learn and have fun at the same time.
And lastly, that God would get all the glory from our time of speaking and from the whole camp.

Also, please praise the Lord for the work He has been doing in us. And He has not failed to open doors for the news of His love to go out.

There are three ways H2O will benefit both you and the man on the curb.

H2O bags are a cost effective and convenient way to provide food for homeless people. For three dollars you can buy a lunch bag that we have filled with non-perishable food, a water bottle, and items such as tic-tacs (or mints), Kleenex, and a Rescue Mission Voucher. They are reasonably small so that they can be stored in your car for a time when you meet a hungry or homeless person in need.
H2O bags spread hope to people that may never go to a rescue mission or shelter. As I've said before most homeless people at the state of begging and panhandling give up seeking a way to get off the streets. They are caught up in the emptiness and loneliness of life on the streets. These bags are specifically designed for people who rely on the generosity of others.
But the third, and I think the most important thing that is in every H2O bag is a tract sharing the hope of Jesus Christ, the Living Water. This ministry is designed to bring more than just physical relief. In John 4:13-14 Jesus says, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." These people are thirsty spiritually. They need the Living Water in their souls which can bring them eternal life.

The Portland Rescue Mission is a shelter of love and hope that provides programs and meals to homeless people.

Mission Statement

We exist to share the Word of God and demonstrate the love of Christ to the homeless and needy through rescue ministries.

Vision Statement

To continue to provide vital, ongoing services and programs to Portland's homeless, and create new opportunities in education, job training, and employment, helping to build self-sufficiency and break the cycle of homelessness.

3 ways you can help homeless people through the rescue mission:

Volunteer at the Portland Rescue Mission. They are looking for individuals looking to serve God through high impact volunteer ministry using their passions, personality and giftedness to become part of our team on a monthly or weekly basis. There are over 60 volunteer staff positions unfilled currently.
Example: Mentor, Tutor, Shift Manager, receptionist, Children's Center helper, public speaker
You can print off Rescue Mission Vouchers. Download and print out these Meal Voucher Coupons and keep them on hand. Then give them away to the hungry and homeless people you encounter.
Pray. Prayer is just as helpful, if not more, than physical help. Prayer ideas: the homeless, volunteers, finances, their board and staff, and their residents. "Rejoice always; pray without ceasing..." - Thessalonians 5:16,17

8 ways to help the homeless...

What do you do when you see someone holding up a sign, "Will Work for Food"? Do you roll down your window and give them money? Do you pretend you didn't see them?

Nobody likes to be confronted by the homeless - their needs often seem too overwhelming - but we all want to treat them fairly and justly.

Here are some simple guidelines to equip you to truly help the homeless people you meet:

1. Never give cash to a homeless person

Too often, well intended gifts are converted to drugs or alcohol - even when the "hard luck" stories they tell are true. If the person is hungry, buy them a sandwich and a beverage.

2. Talk to the person with respect.

Taking time to talk to a homeless person in a friendly, respectful manner can give them a wonderful sense of civility and dignity. And besides being just neighborly, it gives the person a weapon to fight the isolation, depression and paranoia that many homeless people face.

3. Recognize that homeless people (and their problems) are not all the same.

The homeless are as diverse as the colors of a rainbow. The person you meet may be a battered women, an addicted veteran, someone who is lacking job skills...the list goes on.

4. Share God's love whenever you can.

If Jesus were walking the earth today, He would certainly spend time with the homeless. He would speak with them, heal them, and help them. Today, Jesus chooses to work through those who believe and follow Him.

5. Pray for the homeless.

Exposure to the elements, dirt, occasional violence, and lack of purpose all drain years from a person's life. God can use your prayers and the brutality and the futility of life of the street to bring many of the broken to Himself.

6. Take precautions for your own safety.

Some living on the streets are criminals and fugitives running from the law. Always be prudent while talking with street people. Stay in areas where other people can see you. Don't take unnecessary chances.

7. Encourage the homeless to get help through your local Mission.

Rescue missions that are members of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions offer immediate food and shelter to the homelessness through their emergency shelters. Many offer long-term rehabilitation programs that deal with the root causes of homeless. Many also offer "tickets" that can be given to homeless people which can be exchanged at the Mission for a nutrious meal, safe overnight lodging, and the option of participating in a rehab program.

8. Support your local Mission.

Most AGRM member missions receive little or no government funding. They are supported by caring individuals, churches, businesses, and civic groups who see the value of sharing their resources with the less fortunate.

Why Care?

Why should we, as Christians, care? Does being a Christian give us reason for action?

Obviously yes, because Jesus cared. In the gospels, Jesus is seen associating with people that were then considered the “lowest in society” and looked down upon. Jesus spent his time with lepers, tax collectors, and cripples. And He calls us to follow his example. He says in Matthew 25:40 “Whatever you did for one of the least of the brothers of mine, you did for me.” When we give to the poor, we are giving to Jesus!

God also promises in Proverbs 28 verse 27 that if you give to the poor you will lack nothing. God has blessed us with money, clothes, a house and food. He expects that we will use these to bless others. Picture a huge bowl full of pennies, representing God’s blessings. The pennies pour from the bowl into a smaller bowl, your life. As they overflow they fall into an empty basket below. This is a picture of how the bountiful blessings that God pours into our lives are so great that we can’t contain them all. It is for a purpose. He expects us to spread it. I believe that the people in need of that overflowing blessing most are the people who don’t have food or homes.

Because Jesus cares for the “least of these” we should care enough to do something. Because of God’s promises we can always afford to do something about homelessness.

What is the Problem?

In January 2007, the National Alliance to End Homelessness estimated a total of more that 744 thousand homeless people in America. More than 210 thousand of those are on the west coast alone. Almost 24 thousand are in Washington. And approximately 16 thousand in Oregon.
Over the course of a year, an estimated 2.1 million adults experience homelessness, when children are included, this number increases dramatically to 3.5 million.

Patrick, a homeless man in the recovery program at the Portland Rescue Mission, says about living on the streets, “It's the loneliest place in the world. The days are endless, long, dreary, dirty, filthy, hard and uncomfortable.”

Life on the streets is very depressing. There are three stages of depression that come over a homeless person. The first stage is when they enter street life, and in reacting to the shock and the horror of the experience they look for any kind of job they can find. They seek hope and support from local missions, shelters, and organizations. But when days, weeks, and months pass and they still have not found a home, they enter the second stage. They shift their focus from getting off the streets, to how to survive on the streets. They live in the moment. Their goal is now to survive this morning, this afternoon, this night. And finally they enter what seems to be a pit. They are lost in their distress, depression, and hopelessness, completely forgetting the comfort of a home. They wrap themselves up in life on the streets. They start panhandling and begging; drinking more and worrying less.

Homelessness and hunger are problems in our country, in our towns, on the streets that we drive everyday.

Tuesday afternoon brought record high temperatures to Seattle, but a man on a Denny Way corner didn't take off his green winter coat. He had no place to hang it, and no food to get him through the night.

The cardboard sign he clung to begged for help, and each time it didn't come, his unshaven face showed deeper desperation.

Homeless people are real people who share the same hopes and dreams we do yet are saddled with unfair disadvantages.
